LGV and HGV driver jobs explained

LGV and HGV driver jobs

HGV and LGV driver jobs have a complex classification history, but one that is essential to know to navigate the current logistics industry. Here’s our guide to the different vehicle and license types as they exist in 2024:

What is an HGV driver?

An HGV (heavy goods vehicle) driver is an individual qualified to drive heavy goods vehicles that weigh over 3,500kg, or 3.5 tonnes.

What is an LGV driver?

An LGV (large goods vehicle) driver is now functionally the same as an HGV driver. LGV originally stood for a light goods vehicle and referred to commercial vehicles under 3,500kg. In 1992, LGV became large goods vehicle due to regulatory convergence with the EU. Now, both terms are used in the logistics industry to refer to the same type of vehicle.

What are the current licensing categories?

As of 2024, licenses are split into three categories:

  • Category C+E (formerly HGV Class 1) – This license allows drivers to control a vehicle over 3,500kg, with a maximum weight of 44 tonnes. This includes two types of vehicles: fully articulated and drawbar trucks. Class 1 licenses now also allow drivers to drive class 2 vehicles.
  • Category C (formerly HGV Class 2) – This license allows drivers to control vehicles that are over 3,500 kg. This only includes rigid trucks with a maximum weight of 32 tonnes.
  • Category C1 (formerly HGV Class 3) – This license allows drivers to control vehicles weighing 3,500kg-7,500kg, or 3.5 tonnes to 7.5 tonnes. This includes vehicles like ambulances and horseboxes.

Training providers will usually offer courses for each of the licenses. Therefore, aspiring drivers should consider what kind of license they will need for the work they would like to do. Each license will include a theory test, in which prospective drivers are tested on road signs and symbols and logistics industry-specific questions like loading and unloading restrictions, as well as a practical test, in which drivers are tested on their ability on the road to gain their driving license.

How many hours a week can an HGV driver work?

HGV driver jobs are limited to a 9-hour daily maximum, with two exceptions per week where ten hours can be worked. The overall weekly maximum is 56 hours per week. However, there is a fortnightly maximum of 90 hours.

These hours only apply to driving time, so deliveries, admin and other functions are not included in these limits.

How much does an HGV driver earn?

Drivers earn in the range of £25,000 to £35,000 annually. However, there is potential to earn more under certain conditions or with specialisms. Such as with hazardous materials or particularly large loads.
