Goods are in demand all around the country, so it falls to HGV class 1 drivers to ensure that individuals and businesses receive their goods in a timely manner.
There are two types of HGV driver in the UK, class 1 and class 2. Class 1 driving jobs are any jobs that require driving a class 1 heavy goods vehicles (HGV), which are articulated lorries weighing over 7.5 tonnes. Most are 44 tonnes, however smaller vehicles including city drags are becoming more popular.
These vehicles are mostly larger than what a class 2 license allows. A class 2 license lets drivers operate rigid vehicles that weigh up to 32 tonnes.
During the pandemic, there was a driver shortage. The Government allowed new drivers to take their class 1 test without having taken their class 2 tests. This change meant they did not have to take two separate tests.
How to become a class 1 driver
Class 1 driver training is required in order to acquire the class 1 license and be allowed to drive vehicles of class 1 and 2. The first requirement is a standard car driving license, before applying for a provisional lorry license with a D4 and D2 form through the DVLA. This process also requires a medical assessment.
After the DVLA accepts their application, new class 1 drivers must take a four-part test. This test is called the Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC). Each part checks different skills of the driver. This begins with a theory test, followed by assessing case studies of different situations.
Once you complete the theory portion, you must take a practical test. The first section covers off and on-road exercises, followed by a full practical test. After passing, the driver will receive their license and will be able to drive both class 1 and class 2 vehicles.
